JIS College of Veterinary and Animal Sciences (JISCOVAS), under the aegis of the JIS Group of Institutions, observed World Veterinary Day on April 25, 2026, with due solemnity and enthusiastic participation from academicians, veterinary professionals, students, and members of the farming community. The programme was organized in accordance with the global theme, “Veterinarians: Guardians of Food and Health.”
The programme commenced with registration of farmers, followed by an inaugural session that included felicitation of dignitaries, ceremonial lamp lighting, inaugural song (Play of Esraj) and a welcome address delivered by the Principal, Prof. (Dr) Mozammel Hoque, who highlighted the crucial role of Veterinary Science in strengthening public health, ensuring food security, and supporting rural livelihoods.
The event was graced by the esteemed presence of Mr. Amrik Singh, Managing Director, JIS Group, whose support and encouragement added significance to the occasion.
The Chief Guest, Prof. (Dr.) Arunasis Goswami, Hon’ble Vice-Chancellor of BSAEU, Kolkata, delivered the keynote address on “Role of Veterinarians in Food Security and Entrepreneurship.” He underscored the expanding scope of veterinary science in enhancing food systems, promoting rural enterprise, and encouraged students to adopt innovative and entrepreneurial approaches in the field.
The Guest of Honour, Dr. Swati Nandi Chakraborty, Environment Consultant to the Cantonment Board, Government of India, delivered an insightful address on the role of veterinarians within the “One Health” framework, emphasizing the importance of coordinated efforts in addressing zoonotic diseases and environmental health challenges.
As part of the outreach initiative, a free veterinary health camp was organized, providing consultation, diagnosis, and treatment services for animals belonging to local residents. The camp received an encouraging response and served as a practical demonstration of the institution’s commitment to community service. Dr Dayamoy Mondal, Dr Sumanta Kumar Pathak, Dr Samarandra Mahapatra, Dr Samsamul Hoque, Dr Rohit Raj and Dr Mamun Sohal extended veterinary health care and consultancy.
A major highlight of the programme was the community outreach and extension initiative, which witnessed active participation from more than 50 local farmers. The session was designed to be both informative and interactive, facilitating direct engagement between veterinary experts and livestock owners. Farmers were sensitized on scientific animal husbandry practices, disease
prevention, and improved livestock management strategies. Dr Ajit Kumar, Dr SK Arif, Dr Sudarsan Das discussed about cost effective Goat and Poultry Farming at rural environment.
The programme also featured the unveiling of the JISCOVAS college magazine “JISOVETRA”. Dr Jayanta Kumar Kumbhakar composed and designed the cover page in consultation with the faculty members.
Dr Shonkor Kumar Das, Dr Chinmayee Bharali and Dr Easteri Debbarma organized the student-centric activities including poster presentations and an extempore speech competition with the theme of the World Veterinary Day.
Dr P.K. Chowdhury, Mr Ashis Ranjan Ghosh, Mr Arabinda Mukherjee, Mr Debmalya Banerjee of JIS Group were also graced the occasion. The event concluded with a prize distribution ceremony followed by a formal vote of thanks by Prof. (Dr) A. M. Kundu, acknowledging the contributions of all dignitaries, participants, and organizers. The entire event was anchored by Dr Promit Kumar Ghosal with great enthusiasm and professional rhythm.
The successful observance of World Veterinary Day at JISCOVAS reaffirmed the institution’s commitment to advancing veterinary education, promoting animal welfare, and strengthening community engagement in alignment with national and global priorities.
